José Manuel Estrada
José Manuel Estrada (1842-1894) was an Argentine educator, intellectual, and politician. He began his career in education and later served in various government and academic roles, including as a national deputy and university dean. He was a prominent figure in Argentina, particularly known for his advocacy for faith-based education and his opposition to state-controlled secularism.
Teaching trajectory
Estrada began teaching at the Normal School in 1866. He served as a professor of Constitutional and Administrative Rights at the University of Buenos Aires and taught Civic Instruction at the Colegio Normal. In 1869, he became head of the General Department of Schools, focusing on teacher professionalization and educational quality, though he resigned in 1870 due to resistance. In 1874, he was chosen to be the dean of the Faculty of Filosofía y Letras at the University of Buenos Aires. He published "Lecciones sobre la historia de la República Argentina," an influential text, and his educational philosophy centered on fostering students' ethical and spiritual abilities.
Political trajectory
Estrada served as Secretary of Foreign Affairs under Sarmiento. In 1873, he was elected as a national deputy for the province of Buenos Aires. His activism through the newspaper La Unión led him further into politics. He became a national deputy for the Catholic Union in 1886. He firmly opposed Law 1420 of 1884, which mandated free, public, and compulsory secular education.
Connections between both careers
Estrada's educational philosophy, which emphasized moral and intellectual development rooted in religious values, directly informed his political actions. His belief in joint participation between families and the State in education, rather than state control, led him to oppose secular education laws as a national deputy. His "penned activism" to express his educational philosophy through La Unión also led him into politics. He served in educational capacities within the government, such as head of the General Department of Schools, demonstrating a direct link between his educational and political careers.
