Alfredo Lorenzo Palacios

1878-1965Argentina
National Senator

Alfredo Lorenzo Palacios (1878-1965) was an Argentine socialist politician and jurist. He graduated as a lawyer from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and dedicated his life to public service, both in politics as a legislator and in academia as a university professor and dean. He was influential in shaping Argentine law and advocating for social and labor rights.

Teaching trajectory

Alfredo Lorenzo Palacios taught at the Universidad de Buenos Aires after becoming a lawyer. In 1925, he was elected dean of the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences of La Plata. In 1930, he was designated dean of the Faculty of Law of the Universidad de Buenos Aires. In both roles, he focused on establishing connections with other Latin American faculties to promote reform of curricula and pedagogical methods. He supported the University Reform of 1918 and sought to extend it throughout South America. He was designated by el Congreso de Estudiantes Latinoamericanos as Maestro de América.

Political trajectory

In 1902, Alfredo Lorenzo Palacios was elected to the Buenos Aires’ legislature. In 1904, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in Buenos Aires for La Boca, becoming the first socialist in the Argentine Congress and in the American continent. He was elected Senator in 1932, serving until the Senate was dissolved in 1943. In 1955, he was made ambassador to Uruguay. In 1960, he was again elected Senator. In 1963, he was elected as Deputy.

Connections between both careers

Alfredo Lorenzo Palacios saw a strong connection between his teaching and political careers. As a politician, he was a 'lawyer for the humble' and authored protective labor laws, women's suffrage, divorce, the 8-hour workday, and minimum wage. His legislative work aimed to create laws that served as an example globally. As an educator, he emphasized justice and ethics to his law students, stating that 'lawyering is not learning tricks; young people should be made to love justice, support of the weak, stimulus of the strong, basis of morality and foundation of the homeland.' His efforts to reform educational plans and pedagogical methods across Latin America, particularly extending the 1918 University Reform, directly supported the democratic ideals and social progress he championed in politics.
