Nelly Goitiño
Nelly Goitiño (1925-2007) was born in Durazno, Uruguay, and though she lived most of her life in Montevideo, she maintained ties to her origins. She began as a piano teacher, pursued a law degree to fight for minority rights and justice, and later combined her pursuit of justice with art, becoming a prominent figure in theater.
Teaching trajectory
She began as a piano teacher and worked at the rural school Tala de Mariscala in Durazno. She taught Ethics and Methodology of Acting at the Municipal School of Dramatic Arts and presented at local and Latin American conferences on dramatic arts and culture. Her colleague Jorge Arbeleche described her as a 'gran docente'.
Political trajectory
She was a lawyer and court clerk for juvenile offenders in the National Institute for Children and Adolescents from 1972 to 1977. She fought against the dictatorship and with the reconquest of democracy afterward. Politically, she was the President of the Departmental Board of Montevideo and served as a councilwoman. She also directed the national performing arts center (SODRE). She was president of the Uruguayan Actors’ Union.

Nelly Goitiño initially pursued a law degree to fight for minority rights and justice, but found a new path by combining art with this fight, working to create spaces for youth to access theater.
